Welcome to Belgium and to the Annual Meeting of the ‘Association Européenne des Illustrateurs Médicaux et Scientifiques’ (AEIMS) and the ‘Medical Artists’ Association’ of Great Britain (MAA). This year, for the second time, a joint AEIMS-MAA meeting will take place. The Organising Committee and the Education Programme Committee of both organisations have developed a most attractive programme with expert medical and scientific illustrators, artists and scientists presenting their views on Mortality in differing sessions, covering both Science and Art. You are invited to participate in Education sessions of high quality, Medical Art-in-focus sessions, and Plenary Sessions, as well as in challenging Lunch Debates.

From the large number of abstracts and submissions received, both from Europe and the United States, a challenging program of lectures and talks is in place, as well as an exhibition of art work entitled: ‘Confronting Mortality with Art and Science’ This initiative has been substantially supported by our American colleagues, Friends from the Vesalius Trust and The Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI), and we send many thanks.

From a social point of view, it goes without saying that Antwerp is unbeatable in October! The Conference Centre in the Antwerp ZOO is close to the city centre, and we recommend you view the 16th century residence and studio of Peter Paul Rubens and the magnificent gothic Cathedral of Our Lady where you can admire his masterpieces. In his home, the life of this great baroque painter unfolds before your eyes and enables you to discover his multifaceted talent: the painter, architect and diplomat, the collector and scientist.

As part of the programme a guided visit and welcome reception at the historical Plantin Moretus Printing House in the Old Town takes place on Thursday Evening at 18.00 hours.

An extensive programme for accompanying persons can be developed. Since the Conference Centre is close to the Antwerp Central Station visiting places of interest throughout Belgium, such as Brugge, Brussels and Ghent are easily planned.

Do not miss our Annual Dinner in the Marble Hall of the ZOO, which takes place on Friday evening, October 19, from 21.00 hours till midnight. An attractive evening programme will be presented in a fascinating environment comprising music and video entertainment.

On behalf of both the AEIMS board and the MAA board, again welcome to Belgium. We trust that this Medical Art Conference will give rise to discussion and active interaction with your colleagues, and open up new creative ideas for your work.

Finally, we strongly recommend the Medical Art Education Information Day which takes place on Saturday Afternoon from 14.00 hours until 17.00 hours. Belgian beers and champagne will be served.

We are looking forward to your active participation in the AEIMS/MAA 2007 Conference.

Margot Cooper, president AEIMS

Sir Barry Jackson, president MAA
